School Governors

About governing bodies

All schools have a governing body to make key decisions. Governors focus on three core strategic functions:

• Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.
• Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school its pupils and the performance
management of staff.
• Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

About the federation

The Federation of Seaton Valley is a single governing body for three schools:
• Astley Community High School
• Whytrig Middle School
• Seaton Sluice Middle School

This is to ensure that decision-making about educational provision is integrated for students aged 9 - 19 within the Seaton Valley.

How the Federated Governing Body works

The full governing body meets twice each term. There are also committees that focus on specific priorities across all three schools:

• Curriculum and Performance Committee
• Pupil Support Committee
• Resources Committee - finance, staffing and health/safety
• Pay Review Committee - performance pay progression for teachers
• Headteacher Appraisal Committee - performance of Executive Headteacher

The full governing body and each committee has a terms of reference which explains its structure and remit.

Becoming a school governor

Vacancies for parent governors arise from time to time. Any parent whose child is registered at one of the three schools can become a parent governor, which can be a rewarding way to be involved in your child's education.

Governing bodies also have co-opted members who offer particular skills and expertise such as team building, chairing meetings, strategic planning, financial management and community development.

The most important qualities for being a governor are enthusiam, commitment and an interest in education. You don't need to have an education experience but it is useful to bring skills from other areas of your life.

Governors are volunteers. You'll need to attend a full governing body meeting each half term, as well as any meetings of committees that you are asked to join. Some governors also visit schools between formal meetings to monitor progress with a particular subject or whole school priority. It is estimated that most governors contribute between 8 and 10 hours per month.

All governors are required to agree to the federation's Code of Conduct for Governors and undertake a check of their criminal record under the federation's Criminal Convictions Code of Practice for Governors.

Governors can claim legitimate expenses for travel, childcare etc under the Federation's Governor Allowances Policy.

If you are interested in becoming a school governor, please contact Angela Small, Clerk to the Governing Body on 0191 237 1505. You are welcome to visit any of the schools and find out more about what being a governor involves.
